iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore

Great Price "iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore" for $19.96 Today

While this book is not as comprehensive as some have wanted, I found it to be a nice beginners tutorial to writing iPhone applications. The book starts out with an objective-C primer. Since objective-C has such an "interesting" syntax this is badly needed, even though I come from a strong programming background.

Each section includes a reasonably complex sample that puts that section's material to use. Most of the sections also include a "Further Study" area that gives you some homework. This is where the user can expand his knowledge through research and working with the tools.

The book jumps around a bit by first going over simple UI patterns, then spending time talking about audio services and networking, only to come back and spend more time with UI controls, only to jump back into audio/video. Still, one has to remember that this is a reference book and not a novel so jumping around is ok.

The sample applications that I have tried so far are ok and I feel like I have a much better grasp on how the iPhone system works.

This book is not an XCode or Interface Builder tutorial.

good for advanced users - K. Addaquay - New York
i am surprised by some of the reviews this book is getting. personally..i think is WONDERFUL book...BUT not for beginners. i think if you already have a handle on things, this book can REALLY push your understanding to another limit. if you want to be held by the hand..step by step then please dont get this book, i totally understand where the other reviewers are coming from( YOU DONT BUILD APPS WITH INTERFACE BUILDING IN THIS BOOK ... everything is from scratch 100% code ). ...this book is a MIRACLE.

objective not subjective - J. Rawlings - Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Whats with all the complaining about how the api's and device capabilites SHOULD be??? who cares, keep your opinions to forums and blogs, no one wants to read about this who is starting out. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth as soon as you start reading.. asked myself the question, why is this guy even writing about the topic if he's so annoyed with the constraints?! Forget it, too frustrating to make any constructive progress.

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK

Great Price "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK" for $19.00 Today

Every other iphone book out there sticks to teaching the use of Interface Builder everytime you work on the GUI side of you app. That's totally insane.

I bought this book, made it 4 chapters in and thought I wasted my money. I bought another book and a couple months in realized that all I learned was interface builder and how to make the most basic apps possible. I've gone back to this book and realized it was the only one I needed.

Do not waste your time with making interface builder apps unless you are not a programmer or you are just looking to make a simple app over the weekend and probably never publish it.

This book separates the real programmers from the people who pickup an IDE and think they can code because they can drag and drop GUI components.

I would rather not have any books than not have this book. I would recommend buying it with the Learning Objective c book (from the same publisher) if you are new to the language. I find that it is not as simple to pickup as C++, Java or C# because the syntax is sort of odd. The learning objective c book will help with that.

If you are a good programmer, are new to iphone development, are capable of making really good software and want to create complex apps, this is the only book you will need.

If you are not a programmer (either literally or just think you are a programmer but really are not), are new to iphone and have never written software (on your own without using Google to find all your source code), go get one of the other books that teach drag and drop interface building, you will be lost with this book.

Definitely NOT helpful for new iPhone developers. - software developer -
This book is very frustrating, and an immense disappointment. Despite my 40 years of software development on other platforms, this book is woefully inadequate at helping someone new to iPhone development. Unclear documentation, poorly laid out source code (Ms. Sadun admits that it's done this way for ease of book publishing, not for the user of the book). Downloading the code itself is an exercise in frustration, requiring that you set up other tools (without any documentation) just to be able to download. If you bother to compile the examples, every one has the same name, so you are left with a mess to separate and cleanup, both on your mac and on the iPhone. The author gives you a website if you have any questions, but totally fails to answer a single question or provide any help whatsoever.

Perhaps if you are already a very experienced iPhone developer you can gain some useful kernels of wisdom from this book, but otherwise it's useless. Stay away!

Developing Hybrid Applications for the iPhone: Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to Build Dynamic Apps for the iPhone

Great Price "Developing Hybrid Applications for the iPhone: Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to Build Dynamic Apps for the iPhone" for $12.00 Today

Before my review I want to tell you about my background. I have been a web developer (html,dhtml,js,ajax,php,asp,asp.net,cfm) since 1999. I have also done a ton of client server apps on windows with unix / oracle backend. Just recently i released three apps on the android os, with one of them being a phonegap app. So my understanding of programming and is pretty extensive. I have also taken the Stanford iTunes course on iPhone development, which is a must do for any wannabe iPhone dev.

For me I wanted to be able to utilize my abilities to develop apps efficiently. Since I am not a huge fan of Obj-C, I couldn't do that with the native language of the iphone. This book helps you understand how to utilize the main functions of the phone (play sound / accel / gps) without having to write much Obj-C.

As far as moving Dashcode to xCode, this is a very simple process. Once you learn it, which it only takes one time doing it, you will fly through it. I do remember seeing a video the author posted on his website on how to do this. So if you struggle understanding how to migrate the source from Dashcode to xCode, take a look at the authors site.

Something that is really nice that the author did was include a ton of examples on how to use QCiPhone. This includes Dashcode and xCode examples. It includes a nice map example. However it is not the embedded 3.0 map, it is a little different but still works nicely. It allows you to place pins on the map as well as use your fingers to pinch and expand.

So far the book does not mention the use of google group the author set up. If you have questions, you can always post them on the QC google group. Which I have been out there many times searching for methods other users have posted. You can also communicate with the author directly on that site. He is very helpful.

I like how the author has given you a nice model to follow, ie. Validation Control Functions, Business Control Functions, View Control Function, and Error Control Functions. By following this model, you can create a nice modular app with reusable code.

Overall, the book is a great place to start developing your first web app that you put on the app store.

Developing Hybrid Applications for the iPhone: Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to Build Dynamic Apps for the iPhone Overviews

“For those not ready to tackle the complexities of Objective-C, this is a great way to get started building iPhone apps. If you know the basics of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, you’ll be building apps in no time.”

—August Trometer, Owner of FoggyNoggin Software, www.foggynoggin.com

Discover the Easier, Faster Way to Build High-Quality iPhone Applications

Now, you don’t need to dive headfirst into Objective-C to write state-of-the-art applications for the iPhone. You can use web development tools and technologies you already know: JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. In this book, long-time web and mobile application developer Lee S. Barney shows you how to use the QuickConnect and PhoneGap frameworks to create secure, high-quality, modular hybrid iPhone applications.

Lee S. Barney walks you through the entire hybrid iPhone development process, from creating great user interfaces to compiling, deploying, and executing applications. Along the way, he introduces techniques and sample code designed to streamline development, eliminate complexity, optimize performance, and leverage all iPhone’s native capabilities—from its accelerometer and GPS to its built-in database. Coverage includes

  • Using Dashcode and Xcode together to create unique, exciting hybrid iPhone applications
  • Using the QuickConnect JavaScript API to perform tasks ranging from vibrating the phone to accessing the accelerometer and GPS location data
  • Accessing native iPhone functionality using the PhoneGap JavaScript API
  • Storing, retrieving, and managing data on the iPhone, even without network access
  • Using XMLHttpRequest to access or synchronize remote data and use web services
  • Creating Google-based maps for your own app that work like those you see in the iPhone’s Maps application

This book systematically lowers the barriers to iPhone development, enabling web developers to build any iPhone application they can imagine without long development cycles or steep learning curves!

Not recommend - tech dude -
Disappointed after go through the first 10 pages. The codes were successfully compiled with lots of warning points. I had to go into each each of them and commented out. But what is the point! The point is to get us to learn not to get confused why the codes were full of warnings.

Like other reviewer, I agree that the author might be a little bit rush on publishing the book. More details and explanations as well as images are needed.

If you are really into developing iPhone apps, I would recommend checking other books.

Excellent book for both programmers and non-programmers - MacHankStein - Houston, TX
I decided to wait until after my first iPhone app was accepted by Apple in the App store before reviewing this book. My app, based on the QuickConnect framework described in this book is lean and fast, and it was accepted by iTune within three days of submission. What I like about the book is that it showed me in the first chapter how to start developing my app with the QuickConnect framework. My app received 49 downloads on the first day. However, I then decided to start charging for the app and the number of downloads significantly declined.

There are several excellent reviews of this book, and I will not repeat their content here. You must understand that to develop iPhone apps in the way described in this book, you will need to have a Mac - a fast one is not required. You will also need to learn to use Apple's free development platform, XCode.

When I bought this book, I did not realize that the author had a QuickConnect google group and that he would answer my question when I got stuck with a private interface issue. I have bought many technical books, but I have never received personal help from an author before.

Using this book does not confine you to developing in HTML and javascript. He describes the Objective C code in his framework, which provides good examples for your own hybrid development in C, HTML, javascript and css.

I have done C programming in the past, but it is difficult, and one can work much faster using the techniques described in this book. One of my goals is doing custom iPhone app development for corporations, and now I can create prototype apps to show a client in a few hours. To get a competitive edge against HTML only developers, you extend your apps capabilities using the libraries provided by Apple. After the first few chapters, the book begins describing the objective C code within the QuickConnect framework. You do not need to understand these later chapters to start developing your own apps, but they will help you as your development skills improve.

Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone

Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone Review

Bought a few iPhone dev books but being a fan of HeadFirst Design Patterns I decided to give their iPhone book a try - glad I did!
You have to really sit down with Xcode/InterfaceBuilder and go thru the well-thought out examples. When you do, magic happens as page after page gives you the feeling of having an in-house teacher expecting the questions you are going to ask, along with follow-up questions to each of the answered provided.

One criticism I have is it would have good to have a chapter explaining Cocoa and Interface Builder internals; the info is there but scattered all over as the author does prefer waiting to apply theoretical concepts to specific examples. As an example, archiving NIB files and why subclassing a ViewController to reuse a View work the way it does is explained half way thru the book or what a ViewController is exactly and how it handles a View is a critical MVC concept prominent throughout Cocoa programming. A more thorough brain dump on Objective-C would be good instead of letting the reader find out that default class member access level is protected (the chapter does cover ref counting, so why not a more basic OOD concept?)

I really enjoy going thru that book and it definitely is more pragmatic and more hands-on than the other books from APress.
- Highly recommended!

Substantially better than Apress' "Exploring the iPhone SDK" - J. Milam -
For a while now I've been working on getting into developing iPhone applications. I first started with the Apress iPhone "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" and although at the time I felt I had a pretty good understanding of OOP and C programming. However going into the second chapter the book was way over my head. Naturally I stepped back to the Apress "Learn Objective-C on the Mac". The book was helpful although there was very little interaction. It was the teaching style of This does this, here is some example code to demonstrate it. There was little interaction with the reader, walking you through actually building an application.

I picked up this book, and I can't emphasize how great it is. The book engages the reader, is humorous at times, explains theories and concepts multiple times throughout the book to reinforce certain ideas. To anyone looking at starting out with iPhone development, get this book first. You won't regret it.

Useful for concepts but dont try the examples unless you know what you are doing - Lionel Hanners -
this book is really fun to read and it helped me learn some concepts that i was having trouble understanding, however there are so many errors in the code you are supposed to be learning from that the exercises are incomplete-able unless you already know quite a bit about what you are doing. this book has given me the worst headache from trying to figure out where they made a typo.

do not get this book unless you already know the objective syntax like a pro

iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone

iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone Review

Coming from a PHP world, Object-Oriented Programming can be difficult to wrap your mind around. Thankfully the introduction chapters here aren't too far overhead. OOP concepts are a must-have for modern programmers, and this book makes no contentions to teach you Objective-C directly. However, the author has included some good references to where you can take beginner OOP courses.

Through the first year of iPhone's being and well into the pre-2.0 and post-2.0 environment, this book proves invaluable for its chapters on the UIKit, a large part of the API that is used to build graphical apps on the device. Extensive coverage of UIKit classes, as well as undocumented 1.0 enumerations for certain components makes this a frequent reader when you are getting started.

The examples within the chapters cover just about anything you can think of doing with the UI, within reason. You will be able to confidently build apps that rival the ones included by Apple itself. Chapters on audio and graphics subsystems are as complete as could be at the time, and offer some examples that would be useful for game developers.

Quirks about the Ojective-C language are briefly discussed, then wonderfully mastered and repeated frequently to drive the point home. Object delegates, high-level messging, inherritence; you will get a full course of modern OOP goodness.

By the time you are done working with the chapter's examples you will feel like a million bucks. The iPhone platform is now your own lump of clay for you to mold and shape to your will. Couple this with some in-depth cocoa publications and you have the all the keys needed to swing the doors wide open. Feel smart, be informed and discover the tremendously versatile API that is iPhone OS.

The 2.0 version of Apple software makes some important changes, but for the most part, this book is still very useful. Great for beginners -- even if you don't know OOP, you can learn from examples on the 'Net and be way very soon.

Certain technologies bring out everyone's hidden geek, and iPhone did the moment it was released. Even though Apple created iPhone as a closed device, tens of thousands of developers bought them with the express purpose of designing and running third-party software.

In this clear and concise book, veteran hacker Jonathan Zdziarski -- one of the original hackers of the iPhone -- explains the iPhone's native environment and how you can build software for this device using its Objective-C, C, and C++ development frameworks.

iPhone Open Application Development walks you through the iPhone's native development environment, offers an overview of the Objective-C language you'll use with it, and supplies background for the iPhone operating system. You also get detailed recipes and working examples for everyone's favorite iPhone features -- graphics and audio programming, interfaces for adding multitouch functionality to games, the use of hardware sensors, and the device's vast user interface kit.

This book explains:

  • How to access the iPhone's underlying operating system
  • The makeup of an iPhone application
  • How to get the open source tool chain running on your desktop
  • The iPhone's core user interface framework, which is heavily tied to major application-level functions
  • Using the many touted iPhone features such as multitouch, hardware sensors, and gestures
  • Intercepting and handling event notifications for many iPhone-related events
  • Raw video surfaces and 3D transformations that take you deeper into advanced graphics on the iPhone
  • How to record and play simple sounds and intercept sound events
  • Advanced digital audio output using Apple's new Audio Toolbox framework
  • Advanced user interface components such as section lists, keyboards, and image manipulation

The Appendix includes a compendium of miscellaneous code examples for cool application features, such as using the camera and creating a CoverFlow®-like album browser.

This book is a true hacker's book, designed for the millions of users who have run third party applications on their iPhone, but its concepts and code examples have shown to be remarkably similar to Apple's official SDK, making this book a valuable resource for both camps. Any programmer can use this book to write applications with the same spectacular effects that made the device an immediate hit, and impress users just as much as the official iPhone software does. That programmer can easily be you.

It's very detailed and I think was very useful.Even though I have never wrote a line for iPhone App before reading this book, I felt I was understanding. Its a shame It is outdated, but reading this was a excellent help in the understanding of new iPhone SDK App development process.

I am definitely waiting for Zdziarski 's next iPhone Book, iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore.
