Starting an iPhone Application Business For Dummies

Great Price "Starting an iPhone Application Business For Dummies" for $13.99 Today

I made the mistake of assuming this book was for the would-be programmers who wanted to make a million dollars creating an app in the office in their spare time. (Who uses a garage anymore?) Man, was I was way off the mark. Those types may be better served by picking up the upcoming updated edition of iPhone Application Development All-In-One For Dummies. Meanwhile, this book is geared more toward the Business Management grads (and of course the high school dropouts with natural business acumen) with entrepreneurial spirit who want to start a business from scratch.

Some subjects will seem familiar to the business student (the business plan, sizing up the competition, budgeting, etc.), however each subject is tailored toward the specific purpose of creating an iphone app business. For instance, instead of budgeting being a generic term in a textbook, the authors break the subject into specifics: Searching for hourly rates for developers, where to research available jobs, getting quotes from development firms, searching for graphic designers, and so on.

The book also delves into the area of personnel management by explaining how to assemble the development team including subjects increasingly specific to app development such as outsourcing, terms of engagements, certifications, and so on and also gives advice on how to manage the development process once your team is put together. Of course having a great team means nothing without something to put together so considerable space is devoted to the iPhone itself, the history of app development, working with Apple, and how to come up with a winning idea. And of course, many pages are devoted to methods, both free and paid, that you can use to advertise and reach people who may be interested in your product.

The book is summed up with a short list of the traits that seem to be common in the businesses that produce successful, well designed apps. It's a comprehensive book and people interested in the business of software development tailored specifically to the increasingly popular iPhone applications will enjoy it.

Dog-eared reference that can be applied to other platforms - Lincoln J. Mennuti - New York, NY United States
While obviously geared towards folks thinking about starting a business of selling an application on the iPhone platform, this book could just as easily be referenced for other platforms. There's ample references, gotchas to watch for and plenty of things to keep in mind to make sure you've got your bases covered. This book is an excellent guide and trusty reference anyone looking to get into this industry. Highly recommended.

If You Have a Good iPhone App in You, This Book Will Help - Dave Mayer - Huntington Beach
This book won't tell you how to create an iPhone app. It will tell you how to hire developers to do it for you, but it won't guide you through getting your idea out of your head onto Apple's cool, hot iPhone. Still, even if you know how to write an app, and Apple has made it dead easy if you understand programming at all, you'll find a wealth of info here on how to set up your little business and market your app.

There are a bazillion apps out there now, but most of them are, as you probably know if you're reading this, junk. Finding the good ones can be challenging, but there is always room for more good ones and if you have a good one in you, this book will help you get your app noticed among all the clutter.

Cloud Computing, A Practical Approach

Great Price "Cloud Computing, A Practical Approach" for $21.65 Today

Is your company considering migrating to the Cloud? What Cloud strategy is best for your organization? Are you having troubles identifying the major Cloud Vendors or even how to begin using their technology? Are you interested in knowing what the big deal is about the buzz surrounding Cloud? Are you trying to separate fact from fiction about the Cloud? Look no further than Cloud Computing: A Practical Approach, an good introduction to Cloud Computing. The authors of this book have provided a well-structured apologetic and business case for using Cloud Computing Technology; this book has a little bit for everyone: IT Administrators, Architects, Developers, Managers, Executives, etc. Even someone, with general knowledge of IT, such as mobile users, can benefit from this book. In fact, the authors state in the preface that the book is for "anyone who wants to learn about cloud computing" (xiv).

The books is organized in three sections: Getting Started, Cloud Computing Technology, and Cloud Computing at Work, the heart of the book .

The First Section, Getting Started, comprising 88 pages, introduces and explains various Cloud `basics', including the clearing up the confusion over the meaning of "Cloud". According to the authors,
"In essence, cloud is a construct that allows you to access applications that actually reside at a location other than your computer or other Internet-connected device; most often, this will be a distant datacenter...The beauty of cloud computing...is that another company hosts your application (or suite of applications, for that matter). This means that they handle the costs of servers, they manage the software updates, and--depending on how you craft your contract--you pay less for the service" (p. 4).
After providing a brief overview, topics as cloud components, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS),Software as a Service (SaaS), and Storage are all explained. The pros and cons of using Cloud Computing are stated in a fair manner, although the benefits of the Cloud are given edge. Nonetheless, the authors present a comprehensive list of concerns and issues, such as security and privacy, that all should be know before transitioning to the cloud. The authors warn that in some cases it is best not to use Cloud Computing. The major Cloud `Titans', such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, SalesForce, etc, are also highlighted along with some of their offerings. The `Business Case for the cloud' (p. 69-87) is presented in a very adequate manner.

Cloud Computing Technology (76 pages) highlights the Infrastructures of the cloud, such as the Hardware, the networking protocol, and the way Customers and Developers can access the Cloud.

Lastly, the main section, Cloud Computing At Work, almost twice as longer than any of previous sections(154 pages), expands upon topics introduced in Getting Started (and briefly mentioned in Cloud Computing Technology) such, SaaS, Software + Services, and the trade-offs between a `public'(external) Cloud and a Local (internal) Cloud, and a mixed solution of both . In addition, some of the common services that are used by the general population, such a Google mail, Google Docs, or MSN Hotmail are also explained. Some of the discussion on "Virtualization" seems misplaced and should have been included in section II, Cloud Computing Technology.

The book includes three appendices which are probably worth the price of the book by itself. It includes a short, but useful Glossary, and a most beneficial list of who's who of Cloud vendors (over 60), with their sites and brief descriptions of the offerings (p. 319-22). Furthermore, a table of World Wide Web resources on Cloud Computing is provided for further research (p. 324-25).

One of highlights of the book is that it contains many helpful diagrams, and various website snapshots of various Cloud Vendors and their offerings. The listing of vendors' price offerings, key features, services, and URLs are some of the strongest points of the book. It also presents lesser known, but intriguing and innovative companies, Cloud based applications and tools, such "Skytap Virtualization Lab" (p 281-84). Also, there are brief sections on how to start development on the Cloud (Google, SalesForce, and Azure); However as developer I was craving for more.

The Best practices for Migrating and Utilizing the Cloud (p. 297-309) are very thoughtful and sensible in my estimation, although by no means exhaustive. The authors note, "When you plan to move to a cloud solution, there ways to go bout making the change to ensure an optimal experience while paying less than a colossal price. It stars with your analysis and selection of a vendor, and continues with your day-to-day usage of that service" (p. 306). These three factors are in explored in some detail in the chapter. It seems like all the Cloud Computing topics are covered, even if briefly.

Some of the strengths of the book are also its weaknesses. By its very nature of trying to reach a wide audience, some parts will be appealing to some, while others will seem uninteresting. The authors typically introduce topics in an outline form and then discuss them in an orderly fashion. Initially, this allows the readers to get acquainted with terminology, technology, offerings, and benefits of Cloud Computing. However, after a while, some of information becomes repetitive. For example, I suppose for a newbie to this will be very a helpful pedagogue to constantly hammer-in the concepts repeatedly.

At times the book feels like a marketing ploy for the Cloud. Some may find the comments, embedded throughout the book, by Cloud Vendor to be illuminating, but I wanted to see less of it. However, this may say more about me, as a developer. Furthermore, the Authors intend the book to include a wider audience, such as Executives. In this, the authors succeed for the most part. Lastly, sometimes, it is not always clear how all some sections and/or technologies integrate with one another. Even though the book does succeed in including information for a very broad audience, some newbies may have trouble to understanding certain concepts or terminology, since the authors don't go in-depth in various instances.

Despite these minor quibbles, I find the book enlightening on the various vendors and their offerings. If you are new to the cloud or a looking reasons to move to the cloud, either in part or completely, this books makes many compelling reasons for it. At the same time, the book provides a fair assessment of the current problems of Cloud.

I highly recommend this book as a good introduction to Cloud Computing. However, if you don't' have .99 to dish out for the book (Amazon is currently selling at .39), check the free podcasts from PluralSight and you get essentially an abbreviated discussion on many of topics covered in the book.

Learning the iPhone SDK for JavaScript Programmers Overviews

Is it possible for JavaScript programmers to learn the iPhone SDK and live to tell the tale? Technology guru Danny Goodman did, and with this book he leaves a well-marked trail for you to follow. An authority on JavaScript since its inception, Goodman understands the challenges you face with the SDK. He introduces Objective-C and Cocoa Touch in a context you'll readily understand, and shows you how to test iPhone code snippets as you go.

Why bother with Apple's tools? After all, you could bypass them and just build web apps for the iPhone. But web apps can't access an iPhone's music library, address book, camera, accelerometer, or multi-touch events. Nor can you sell web apps in the App Store. If you're a web developer and really want to take advantage of the iPhone, the SDK is your tool -- and this is your book.

  • Create a test workbench app that you can use throughout the development process
  • Understand how iPhone OS frameworks compare to third-party web frameworks
  • Become familiar with the Model-View-Controller architectural pattern
  • Learn how iPhone data types, pointers, and memory management are different from JavaScript
  • Compare Objective-C language fundamentals and their JavaScript equivalents
  • Get a recipe-driven reference for programming with Objective-C and Cocoa Touch

Not Great - Bobo - Dallas, TX
I have gotten through the first 7 chapters of this book. I am going to switch to something else. I just feel like it is taking so long to actually accomplish anything. And from looking some of the intro videos from Apple, the author seems to be going the long way around the barn for everything. Here is what I want from an development book.

1) Outline the structure of what you are going to do
2) Fill in the appropriate code with explanations
3) Run the code

- Then repeat this process with expansions and improvements.

Here is the format of this book

1) Blab on forever about concepts, inserting lame jokes
2) Code things without explanation, just saying, we will explain why later
3) Go back and try to explain things after it is coded
4) Randomly switch topics like a stream of consciousness. Oh, why don't we stop here and worry about an icon....

I did not realize how bad I had it until I watched an apple developer conference video where the speaker demonstrated the power of Cocoa and Interface Builder to put together an application in an hour that does more than what I have gotten so far out of 7 chapters.

I just don't trust that this author is really sharing from his vast understanding of the best way to get things done.

Not the correct style/content for a development book - Manuel A. Ricart - Cottage Grove, MN United States
The content of the book is basic and is OK as an introduction, however there are a few things I don't like about this book:

1) Some key steps are usually missing or not highlighted enough. For example, in order to dismiss the keyboard on the "ReturnToMe" application, there's a very important setting that needs to be made in Interface Builder, without it, it doesn't work. This part is missing.

2) The code samples are fairly crude code. Instead of using a single value to determine something, additional instance variables are created. Not elegant, and worse not reusable. In this case, the sample code was to scroll a text field to account for the keyboard showing/hiding. Similarly values like phone numbers are stored multiple times in the code. A more elegant solution is to simply store the value on the UI where its shown, and to read it from the button/label when necessary.

3) Presentation of code samples sometimes direct the reader to "insert the after this text" type of thing. I understand the need to save space. However when right next to this I find screenshots of XCode that are useless for any purpose (like adding accessor methods), the logic doesn't hold. Scrap the picture and list the code, as this is always more useful to the reader.

4) While there's a lot of text to try and motivate development of useful apps, the sample apps spend time on useless minutia and skip important tips. For example a bit of effort goes into developing a 'hidden button' to what amounts to setting a preference for the application. The space would be better served by showing how to set an application preference. Other details like customizing the keyboard that will show when the user taps on a field is more useful and directly affects the usability of the application for the user. The sample doesn't do what the text preaches.

5) A cool feature on the ReturnToMe application is enabling the user to dial the number. However the way this was implemented is silly. Instead of providing a pointer to the API to dial a phone, the phone number is placed in a UIWebView (to get the feature for free). The code to this is 100X more than calling the API directly. - [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[NSURL [..]]. And yes, I want to see how to use the UIWebView, but that usecase is the wrong place for it.

After the initial application, the book jumps into a larger application. I find larger samples to be less useful to the reader than small recipe type snippets that cover API ground. While a complex app is cool, it should simply be a downloadable sample for readers to examine.

iPhone Advanced Projects

Great Price "iPhone Advanced Projects" for $10.50 Today

As the name suggested, this book talks about advanced iPhone programming topics. Each of the 11 chapters packs loads of information and real world experience from the authors. You will actually spend more time to digest the information than just reading it. Highly recommended to experienced and seasoned iPhone developers, but also offers quite some insights for developers new to the iPhone scene. You will be amazed on how much you can learn from the authors of the book. And lots of code samples throughout the book, you won't be disappointed.

Chapter 1 - Great introduction to the particle system, the very basic element for many types of games.
Chapter 2 - Interesting coverage on how to build a networked app/game, with the help of Google's free App Engine service using Python.
Chapter 3 - Using Core Audio to do audio streaming. This chapter is quite hardcore for me, but I was able to follow through and learned quite a lot about how audio streaming works and some tricks as well.
Chapter 4 - This chapter is right on the money - debugging! The author showed a few different approaches when debugging your iPhone apps.
Chapter 5 - This chapter covers basic SQLite operations in your codes. Currently there's no Objective-C delegate/wrappers for SQLite operations, so everything is in C fashion. There are other frameworks for a better interface with SQLite.
Chapter 6 - If you don't like dealing with SQLite, with the introduction of iPhone SDK 3.0, you can use Core Data :) This chapter shows you how Core Data and KVC protocol works.
Chapter 7 - How to send emails from your apps w/o going to the email client. The author shows both online and offline modes, as well as a nice introduction to three20 framework.
Chapter 8 - This chapter talks about networking issues, sockets, wifi detection, power management, etc. Also some insights if you want to roll out your own networking protocol stacks.
Chapter 9 - This is my favorite chapter talking about how to design an effective and responsive user interface. NSOperation and NSOperationQueue are covered, as well as tips & tricks on how to display large amount of data w/o slowing down.
Chapter 10 - Very nice introduction to Apple's push notification service, including both setup steps and server side scripts.
Chapter 11 - Mapping and Reflection on OpenGL ES. This is a brief introduction to OpenGL ES environment mapping and reflection. I wish this chapter is longer and has more coverage in depth. But again, this is not an OpenGL ES book, the topic itself deserves a whole other book.

Overall, this book is pretty advanced in many aspects of the iPhone SDK frameworks. Coverage on SDK 3.0 frameworks are much welcomed and the competence of the authors are undeniable. Again, I highly recommend this book to any iPhone developer, no matter how seasoned you are, you will learn a thing or two from this book.

Too Many Mistakes to be Useful - Clifford Sharp - Longmont, CO
I DO NOT recommend this book at all for any level of iPhone developer(s).

One of the projects actually just takes an Apple code example and adds a few methods here and there. I don't have to buy a book to do that. One project adds some methods and ivar's to files that are generated files per Core Data. This is always a bad idea.

There are many mistakes in the source code in the book. The source code in the book doesn't match the downloadable source code in many places. The downloadable source code fails to build and is missing files. I found such obvious errors in the downloadable source like no semicolon at the end of some of the lines. This code was obviously never built and/or tested.

This book was very poorly and hastily put together. Don't waste your money, but more importantly, don't waste your time.

This book gives me a lot of Xcode!! - Peter Hwang -
Last year, I participated in an iPhone project.
Even though I have lots of software developing experiences, that was not so easy for me.
Because I didn't know much about Xcode Tools.

While I'm reading this book, I am surprised that Xcode has so many features that I didn't know.
This book is pretty easy to read and understand and useful to me. :D
